We finally had a chance to go to a Birmingham Stallions game at the new Protective Stadium in downtown Birmingham. We went with the club level seats and boy were we glad to have a back and not just be on a metal bleacher. It also came with food and drinks. They have a bar in the club area where you can purchase alcohol if you choose. It’s hard not to compare the entire experience and the food to The Zone at an Alabama game. Let’s just say that it didn’t compare! There is no competing with The Zone!

We went to the food bar and fixed our plates your choices are basically hamburgers and hotdogs with a few cold salads, like potato salad and pasta salad, and they had bags of chips. We didn’t see any soft drinks or tea. I saw an orange igloo cooler of water with small cups. There were no signs or anything, so we assumed that you had to purchase drinks elsewhere. We bought 2 bottles of water from one of the bars and went to our seats. We went back later for dessert and guess what I found, the soft drink dispenser off to the side kind of hidden and no one was using it. With the number of children you would have expected to see a crowd around it. Oh well! We’ll know next time.

We did walk around to the opposite side of the stadium to the souvenir tent, but they didn’t have anything we needed. We did get a different perspective of the stadium from that end.

We did see a couple people that we knew, but we didn’t get a chance to talk to them. I also saw on Facebook some other friends that were there that we didn’t see. We also saw lots of people dressed up like horses and some with cowboy hats.

They honored the first ever Stallions cheerleaders from 1983-85, the first time they were in Birmingham. They were called the Fillies. They were there hanging with the current cheerleaders.

It started to rain, we had taken raincoats, but ultimately decided to start making our way to the car. As we were headed out they made an announcement that they were in an lightning delay and that all fans had to move out of their seats. You could go to your car and would be readmitted when they started back. Everyone had moved up under a small awning area and were several people thick and all jam packed together. We decided to just head on home and watch the rest from the comfort of home. It ended up being a couple hour delay and a late finishing game, but the Stallions did win.

The Stallions went on to win their 3rd back to back championship!
